PITTURA, PROCESSO E PUNCTILIOUS: UNA CONVERSAZIONE CON HUGO MULDER DHM
Se hai mai avuto l’occasione di camminare per le strade di Amsterdam, avrai sicuramente incontrato un’opera di Hugo Mulder DHM. Sin dal 2001, il prolifico artista, pittore e graphic designer ha contrassegnato la sua città natale di opere minuziose e variopinte (sotto forma di sticker, paste-up e murales epici), dando vita a un seguito di culto. Tra quel seguito si annoverano clienti e collaboratori prestigiosi, tra cui Nike, Adidas e Coca-Cola.
Con più di 80 mostre in solitaria o di gruppo, oltre al suo libro d’arte in edizione limitata, il profilo di Mulder non fa che crescere. La prossima: Punctilious, un’esibizione auto-curata del suo recente lavoro svolto a fianco di colleghi leggendari della street art, DOES e The London Police. Come è passato dal punk e dai graffiti anni ‘80 alla creatività così ricercata? Recentemente lo abbiamo incontrato per scoprirlo.
Quando è nato il suo interesse per l’arte e il design?
Sono cresciuto circondato da molta arte. Nella mia famiglia c’è un grande collezionista d’arte e i miei genitori possedevano libri su artisti quali Picasso e Karel Appel che leggevo da bambino. Successivamente ho tentato di creare la mia versione dei quadri di Picasso e Appel e nel 1984 ho iniziato a sperimentare i graffiti con gli amici. Questo mi ha permesso di appassionarmi ai colori e alle forme. Questa passione si è evoluta in modo naturale nel graphic design e poi nella street art e nelle belle arti.
Come ha menzionato, il suo lavoro interseca diversi aspetti del mondo delle arti, dai graffiti al graphic design, alla street art e anche alla cura. Perché?
Lavorare con stili diversi mi permette di non annoiarmi mai. A volte dedico molto tempo a uno stile finché sento il bisogno di passare a un altro, ed è questa la cosa divertente. Non ha importanza se si tratta di un logo o di un murale oppure di una tela. Mi piace fare tutto.
In che modo si approccia a una tela bianca?
Per me tutto ha sempre inizio da una storia. Di solito ho già in mente i personaggi che voglio ritrarre. In un primo momento lavoro digitalmente con fotografie e altri elementi prima di decidere se un personaggio è abbastanza valido. Poi inizio sulla tela con uno sfondo astratto. È una delle fasi più divertenti perché puoi davvero trascinarci il dipinto o usare le bombolette spray e gli evidenziatori. Sulla tela puoi semplicemente sfogarti. E questo è un rimando al mio background nel mondo dei graffiti.
Quindi utilizza queste tecniche analoghe per creare qualcosa che risulta molto stilizzato e all’apparenza digitale. Come ci è arrivato?
In quanto graphic designer, mi piace molto quello che posso fare con un computer. Puoi realizzare linee perfette, forme perfette ed è molto facile farlo digitalmente, ma lo vedo raramente riprodotto sulla tela.
Non so come ci sono arrivato, ma ho iniziato a provare a dipingere tele in modo così rigoroso e perfetto come un computer. Utilizzo un computer per la progettazione, poi dipingo a mano quel design sulla tela con l’obiettivo di essere persino migliore della macchina. Per completare una singola tela sono necessarie circa sei settimane. Le persone la osservano da lontano e si chiedono se sia stampata oppure no, ma quando si avvicinano si accorgono che è dipinta.
Quali sono gli aspetti di Amsterdam e dei Paesi Bassi che ritiene essere promotori di tanta creatività?
Amsterdam è conosciuta in tutto il mondo per il pensiero progressista. E questa caratteristica attrae gli artisti che vengono qui e percepiscono questa atmosfera ovunque. Penso che rimandi all’epoca d’oro, ai pittori famosi come Rembrandt, Van Gogh: qui la libertà di fare quello ciò che si vuole è ideale per le persone creative.
In che modo questo aspetto si lega alla nuova mostra, Punctilious?
Volevo riunire artisti che adottano il mio stesso approccio al loro lavoro, ma con risultati molto diversi. Quindi in questa esibizione si potrà osservare una storia coerente per quanto riguarda le tecniche e l’attenzione ai dettagli piuttosto che lo stile e il soggetto. E ritengo che offra qualcosa di nuovo e interessante da vedere.

Comparison Rates
Comparison Rates: The Comparison Rate must be found on a website available to be booked by the general public other than Radissonhotels.com within 24 hours of booking your hotel room on Radissonhotels.com and at least 48 hours prior to midnight hotel local time of your arrival date.
The Comparison Rate must be for the same hotel, same reservation date(s), same room type (i.e. room size and amenities), same number of guests, same currency as the Radissonhotels.com confirmation email, and the same advance payment and refund policies and restrictions must apply.
The Comparison Rate must still be available at the time Customer Care validates the claim.
The rates will be compared net of any taxes, gratuities, or any other fees associated with the room rate; however, if the Radissonhotels.com rate has taxes included, we will verify that the total cost of your Comparison Rate is lower so that prices are compared on a relative basis. Rate disparities solely attributable to rounding, fluctuations and/or difference in currency exchange rates are excluded from the Best Rates Guarantee. Claims will be denied when the difference between the Comparison Rate and the rate on Radissonhotels.com is less than 1USD, 1EUR or 1GBP or equivalent in the local currency of the hotel.
When a claim covers a stay for multiple, consecutive nights, the rates will be reviewed based on the average over the entire stay (the total consecutive nights stayed by the same guest or guests in the same hotel, regardless of the number of check-ins or check-outs or separate reservations). Comparison Rates applicable to only a portion of the reservation will not be honored.
